As the blessed month of Ramadan drew to a close, Forth Valley Unity (FVU) had the privilege of reflecting on four weeks of incredible togetherness, heartfelt generosity, and genuine community spirit at the University of Stirling. Each week, beginning with the first Friday, the campus came alive with laughter, warm smiles, and the delightful aroma of home-cooked meals, all in the true spirit of Ramadan and unity.

These weekly iftar gatherings were the result of a beautiful collaboration between Forth Valley Unity and the University of Stirling’s BeConnected programme. Co-hosted by the university’s vibrant student societies – including the Islamic Society, the Middle Eastern and North African Society, the Pakistani Society, and the Ahlul Bayt Society – the events saw the collective energy of students, volunteers, community members, and staff united towards a noble purpose.

What is BeConnected?

The BeConnected programme at the University of Stirling is all about developing community engagement and creating opportunities for genuine connections between students, staff, and local community groups. With a wide range of events and initiatives, BeConnected celebrates diversity, sparks dialogue, and nurtures an inclusive campus environment. For more details, visit the BeConnected page on the University of Stirling website.

A Welcoming Space in the Heart of Campus

All iftars were hosted in Level 3 of Campus Central — a bright, modern, and open-plan space perfectly designed for gathering, sharing, and reflection. The atmosphere was both calm and energised, offering designated family rooms, children’s areas, and easy accessibility. The venue quickly evolved into more than just a place to break fast; it became a centre for belonging and tranquility for everyone.

Homemade Meals with Heart

A defining feature of these evenings was, undoubtedly, the food. Each meal was lovingly prepared, showcasing a delightful mix of South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines. Every dish, thoroughly homemade and brimming with flavour, was served with care. Volunteers ensured that all ingredients were clearly labelled, enhancing both confidence and inclusivity. Beyond mere nourishment, the food symbolised culture, tradition, and a shared act of generosity that brought everyone together both physically and spiritually.

A Growing Crowd, A Growing Family

What began as a gathering of around 180 people blossomed organically into an event that welcomed over 300 attendees by the fourth week. This growth was driven by the warm experiences on offer – word of mouth, sincere hospitality, and a personal connection that kept guests returning week after week. The crowd was as diverse as it was welcoming, featuring students of all faiths and none, families with children, local community members, and visiting staff. Dedicated children’s areas allowed for playful exploration, intensifying the festive atmosphere of Ramadan.

Moments That Mattered

There were countless standout moments. One especially moving element was welcoming several reverts to Islam – individuals experiencing their first Ramadan after embracing the faith. For many, these iftars were about so much more than food; they provided a supportive space to explore a new identity and connect with others on a similar journey. Additionally, insightful talks from Dr Irfan and representatives from FOSIS each week inspired reflection and reinforced values of mercy, patience, and charity.

Feedback That Speaks Volumes

The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive and deeply humbling. Here are a few poignant examples:

“More events like this should be organised at Stirling uni.”
“I cannot wait for next year’s session, InshaAllah.”
“It’s a calming and heartwarming experience to have such a platform where everyone interacts and shares their holy moments of Ramadan with each other.”
“Such a diverse community of people, good fun and nice hosts.”
“Everyone was very friendly and there was a really nice sense of community — especially the fact that they welcomed everyone warmly even if they were not Muslim or participating in Ramadan.”

And of course, we all loved hearing: "The food was delicious."

Charity at the Heart: £2,000 Raised for Gaza

Ramadan is a period not only of reflection but also of action. This year, Forth Valley Unity aimed to channel the blessings of Ramadan towards those in need in Gaza. Through direct donations, card readers, and online links, the community raised £2,000 for Muslims Around the World (MATW).

MATW was carefully chosen for their 100% donation-to-cause policy and hands-on access to communities in Gaza. Their efforts in distributing food parcels, ensuring clean water, and providing essential medical support were not only showcased during the events but also deeply appreciated by attendees.

Unity Through Partnership

None of this could have been achieved without the continued support of our dedicated community partners. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Falkirk Central Mosque, Falkirk Islamic Centre, Alloa Masjid, and Stirling Mosque. Their encouragement, volunteer efforts, and spiritual presence significantly amplified the success of each event.

Eid Funday: Celebrating with the Whole Family

Looking ahead, we are thrilled to announce that Forth Valley Unity is organising an Eid Funday – a large-scale, family-friendly event designed to bring our community together. The day will feature a diverse range of activities and attractions, including:

  • Vendors and stalls offering a variety of goods
  • An extensive selection of food options that blend traditional and modern flavours
  • Henna art, jewelry, and clothing stands
  • A variety of snacks and treats for all ages
  • Fun activities for kids – from bouncy castles and climbing frames to arts and crafts

Join us on Sunday, 13th April 2025 at the Stirling Rugby Club for a day of celebration, family fun, and community building. Whether you’re attracted by the food, the activities, or the chance to connect with neighbours, this is a day for everyone. Find out more and register here.

Looking Ahead

These Ramadan iftars have raised the bar for community collaboration and inclusivity. We are confident that these experiences have not only deepened the bonds between Muslim students and the local community but have also cemented the university’s reputation as a space that truly celebrates diversity and belonging. Already, plans are underway with the University of Stirling for an even bigger and more impactful Ramadan 2026.

With extended planning, increased outreach, and a host of new volunteer opportunities, we look forward to building on this year’s success and reaching even more hearts in the coming year, InshaAllah.

A Final Word

To every person who attended, donated, supported, or simply sent their prayers our way – Jazakum Allahu Khayran. Your contribution made this Ramadan at Stirling unforgettable. May Allah accept our efforts, forgive our shortcomings, and continue to guide us as we serve our communities in every blessed month to come.
